About bolt.diy 1.0.0 — Open-Source AI Web App Builder, Any LLM
bolt.diy is the official open-source version of Bolt.new, StackBlitz’s tool that builds full-stack web apps from a prompt. The difference is that you choose the model for each prompt, from more than 19 providers, local ones included. It is MIT licensed, maintained by StackBlitz and community contributors, and was started by Cole Medin.
This page links to the official v1.0.0 desktop builds on GitHub. Bineret did not build bolt.diy and is not affiliated with StackBlitz.
Check the dates first
v1.0.0, released on 12 May 2025, is still the newest release. Work continued on the main branch afterwards, but the most recent commit we found was on 7 February 2026. So the desktop builds here are more than a year old, and development has been quiet for several months. Running from source gets you what the main branch has; the desktop app does not.
What it does
- AI full-stack web development for Node.js-based apps, with an integrated terminal that shows the commands the AI runs.
- 19+ providers: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Groq, xAI, DeepSeek, Mistral, Cohere, Together, Perplexity, Hugging Face, Ollama, LM Studio, OpenRouter, Moonshot, Hyperbolic, GitHub Models, Amazon Bedrock and OpenAI-compatible APIs.
- Images in prompts, to show the AI what you mean.
- Safer changes: revert to earlier versions, see a diff of what the AI changed, and lock files so it leaves them alone.
- Get your code out: download a project as a ZIP, sync it to a folder, or clone and import with Git.
- Deploy to Netlify, Vercel or GitHub Pages.
- More: Supabase integration, Expo apps for React Native, MCP tools, charts and data analysis, codebase search, and voice prompts.
The builds in this release
- Windows x64:
bolt-1.0.0-win-x64-setup.exe, 118 MB. - macOS Apple Silicon:
Bolt.Local-1.0.0-arm64.dmg, 152 MB. - Linux ARM64: an AppImage, 163 MB, and a .deb, 96.6 MB.
There is no Intel Mac build and no x64 Linux build in v1.0.0. On those machines, run bolt.diy from source or in Docker.
Keys and cost
You bring your own API keys, set either in the app under Settings, Providers, or in .env.local. Every provider bills you directly. Ollama and LM Studio run models on your own hardware at no extra cost, though generating whole apps is demanding work for small local models. The project lists prompt optimisation for smaller models as planned, not done.
When to use something else
If you want an app builder that is still shipping releases, Dyad released a new version on 11 September 2026. If you want an agent that works on an existing codebase rather than generating a new app, OpenHands is closer to that job.
Key capabilities
Bolt.new, with your own model
The same prompt-to-app idea as Bolt.new, but you pick the provider and model per prompt, from OpenAI and Anthropic to DeepSeek, OpenRouter or a local Ollama, using your own API keys.
Changes you can inspect
A terminal panel shows the commands the AI runs, a diff view shows what it changed, you can revert to an earlier version, and file locking keeps chosen files out of its reach.
From prompt to deployed
Download the project as a ZIP, sync it to a folder or push it with Git, then deploy to Netlify, Vercel or GitHub Pages. Supabase handles a database when the app needs one.
An old release
v1.0.0 dates from 12 May 2025 and remains the newest release. The latest main-branch commit we found was on 7 February 2026, so expect little change and run from source for newer code.
Gaps in the builds
Windows x64, Apple Silicon macOS and ARM64 Linux only. Intel Macs and x64 Linux machines need to run from source or in Docker.
Questions & Answers
Is bolt.diy the same as Bolt.new?
It is the official open-source version of Bolt.new from StackBlitz, with the key difference that you choose the model and bring your own API keys.
Is it still maintained?
Slowly, at best. The latest release is v1.0.0 from 12 May 2025, and the most recent commit we found on the main branch was on 7 February 2026.
Why is there no build for my Intel Mac or x64 Linux PC?
v1.0.0 only includes Windows x64, Apple Silicon macOS and ARM64 Linux builds. Run it from source or in Docker on other machines.
Can it use a local model?
Yes, through Ollama or LM Studio in the Local Providers settings. Generating full apps is hard work for small models, so expect weaker results than with large hosted ones.
Does it cost anything?
bolt.diy is free under MIT. Hosted model providers bill you for what the AI generates, and writing whole files can use a lot of tokens.
Can I take the code elsewhere?
Yes. Download the project as a ZIP, sync it to a folder, push it with Git, or deploy it to Netlify, Vercel or GitHub Pages.
Is Bineret connected to bolt.diy or StackBlitz?
No. This page describes bolt.diy and links to the builds published on its GitHub release.
Tutorials
Install the desktop app
Windows x64: run bolt-1.0.0-win-x64-setup.exe. Apple Silicon Mac: open Bolt.Local-1.0.0-arm64.dmg. ARM64 Linux: use the AppImage or the .deb.
If macOS says the app "is damaged", the project's README gives this fix:
xattr -cr /path/to/Bolt.app
Or run from source
Needed on Intel Macs and x64 Linux, which have no build in this release, and the way to get the main branch's newer code. Install the Node.js LTS release, then:
git clone https://github.com/stackblitz-labs/bolt.diy.git
cd bolt.diy
npm install -g pnpm
pnpm install
pnpm run dev
Or use Docker
cp .env.example .env
cp .env.example .env.local
Put your provider keys in one of those files, then build an image with pnpm run dockerbuild for development or pnpm run dockerbuild:prod for a self-contained production image. The README's Docker section covers running them.
Add your API keys
Open Settings, then Providers. The Cloud Providers tab lists OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and the rest: switch a provider on, click its card and paste the key. The Local Providers tab covers Ollama and LM Studio. For servers, set keys in .env.local instead.
Build something
Pick a provider and model, describe the app, and attach an image if it helps. Watch the terminal panel for the commands the AI runs, check the diff view before accepting changes, and lock any file you want left alone. Download the project as a ZIP or deploy it to Netlify, Vercel or GitHub Pages when it works.
Support
Where support comes from
bolt.diy is a community effort around StackBlitz's project. The bolt.diy docs cover installation, the oTTomator Think Tank community answers questions, and bugs go to GitHub issues.
What Bineret covers
